All change at Haymarket

The news that the council have voted for Edinburgh's trams to stop at Haymarket, rather than going to St Andrew's Square is incredible, even by the fucked-up standards of this project. Can you imagine having to change there to a bus to complete your journey? More likely, nobody would use it for the journey from the airport. I certainly wouldn't. I do wonder if it's not an attempt to goad Alex Salmond into paying more for it. But he's too smart for that I think.

It seems none of the parties that voted for the amendment or abstained really wanted the Haymarket option. They wanted to be seen to protest, but assumed the original option would go ahead anyway.

So politicking gone wrong. The whole Trams Project could be described as such, really.

Interesting point about Alex Salmond's intentions. The Scottish Government, not Edinburgh Council, is responsible for delivering value to Scottish taxpayers for the major part of the cost. My company outsources a bunch of services to contractors of varying quality. Telling customers that bad service was the fault of our crap partners and has nothing to do with us, just doesn't cut it.

Really interesting blog by the way.

It's unclear whether it was politicking gone wrong, as you say, or a carefully calculated option, assuming that the outcry would result in the Government digging a bit deeper in their pockets. In any case, it looks like we might have trams to St Andrews Square yet. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-14734520
