Claws of Axos

I acquired this Dr Who DVD on Friday to add to my already all-too-large collection. I'm not greatly taken by it as a story, but it has a fantastic little extra that tells of the fascinating details of Reverse Standards Conversion, complete with Open University style graphics. If only there were more details...

OK, I'll take off my anorak now.

OK, I'll ask it then:

What on earth is "Reverse Standards Conversion"?

Something to do with black and white to colour transmission? Or analog to digital?

Enough guessing...

It's to do with converting back from NTSC (US) to PAL (UK). Many programs were converted for sales overseas and the originals lost, so the NTSC versions are now the only source. It's explained further in the splendidly anoraky restoration team site: http://www.restoration-team.co.uk/
